PROPOSED STATE FLAG
MINNESOTA NORTH STAR FLAG
The State Flag depicts the “North Star” shining upon a “land of ‘sky-tinted waters’” [mni sota makoce].
The North Star recalls our state motto, L'Étoile du Nord – which comes from the early pioneers.
Waves represent our name, "Minnesota" – from the Dakota-Sioux phrase for “sky-tinted water,” or “cloudy water.”
Blue recalls our “sky-tinted” lakes and rivers. White recalls our winters. Green represents our farmland and forests.
Gold recalls our state's natural wealth. The star-format echoes that of our previous State Flags (gold, 5-pointed).
(Note: A white-star version was also submitted to streamline the color-scheme.)
Ceremonial flagstaffs may be surmounted by a finial based on the “North Star” floor inset in the Capitol Rotunda.

PROPOSED STATE SEAL
The State Seal represents the North Star State as a guiding light for the Union and a gathering place for many cultures.
It follows the North Star pattern on the Capitol Rotunda floor, by architect Cass Gilbert –
with distinct versions based on the brass inset (embossed/medallion) and marble inlay (colorized, tonal, & monochrome).
